Our vision

Our vision for sustainability is to provide the same level of protection we offer our customers, as we do our planet. From recycling to tree planting, we're taking steps in every area of environmental responsibility.

SMI 2025 report

OUR ESG 2030 GOALS

By 2030, SMI is setting bold environmental goals to push forward our sustainability efforts. We’re cutting waste, lowering emissions, and increasing our use of renewable energy.

From reducing plastic and improving water efficiency to generating solar power, we’re taking impactful steps to protect the planet and build a cleaner, greener future.

  • Achieve a 90% reduction in plastic usage across operations and product.

  • Increase municipal waste reduction to 90% and decrease overall waste by 30%.

  • Reduce our carbon footprint by an overall 45%, with a 90% reduction in scope 1 & 2 emissions 60% scope 3.

  • Reduce our waste consumption by 15%.

  • Generate green electricity onsite from solar panels by 2025.

  • Committing to conducting ourselves in a transparent and sustainable way.

  • Mitigating biodiversity loss to protect our ecosystems and all living organisms.

OUR CARBON JOURNEY

  • 2021 emissions calculated, covering SMI's scope 1, 2 and 60% of scope 3 emissions.

  • Through ClimatePartners green energy scheme we reduced our scope 2 emissions by 60 †CO2e.

  • 2021 measured emissions SMI became a certified climate neutral business at an operational level- offsetting 251 +CO2e.

  • Our offsetting projects focused on providing clean drinking water and afforestation in the UK.

  • 2022 carbon footprint we measured our emissions across all activities in the scopes totalling 20,981 †CO2e.

  • 2022 offset our operating footprint totalling 434 +CO2e.

  • 2023 carbon footprint total 42,211.8 +CO2e.

  • In 2023, the operational footprint was offset through environmental and social projects totalling 433.4 †CO2e, a 1% increase from last year.

PROJECT 1 - CLIMATE AND OCEAN PROTECTION

In a Maharashtra village, 85% of households traditionally use cookstoves that consume large amounts of wood and create smoke. Introducing efficient portable cookstoves made of cast iron has been revolutionary. These stoves use up to 70% less firewood, significantly reducing energy consumption and air pollution.

This transition brings multiple benefits to households and the community:

  • Decreased demand for firewood eases pressure on local forests, saving households money and time, which can be redirected towards education or work opportunities.
  • Improved indoor air quality leads to fewer respiratory issues.
  • This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Life on Land (SDG 15).

PROJECT 2 - RENEWABLE ENERGY

Our climate projects are certified by the Gold Standard or the Verified Carbon Standard, ensuring the highest level of environmental integrity and impact. We support a diverse range of renewable energy initiatives, including wind energy projects in India, China, Indonesia, and Turkey, and solar energy projects in India and China.

Additionally, we invest in hydropower projects in Turkey and Sri Lanka, and biomass projects in India, China, and Thailand. Energy can also be efficiently harnessed from biogas and biomass plants using animal dung or organic residues, contributing to sustainable energy solutions and reducing our carbon footprint.

PPE RECYCLING SCHEME

We're committed to sustainability, and our recycling scheme helps you breathe new life into your end-of-life PPE.

How it works:

  1. Order your recycling bin: Delivered right to your site.
  2. Fill it up: Collect your used PPE, and we'll sort the collection.
  3. We recycle: Your PPE is responsibly processed, reducing waste and emissions.
