Breaking in your high leg boots properly helps prevent discomfort and injuries.

Here’s how to do it right:

  • Start with thick or cushioned socks to minimise friction.
  • Apply leather conditioner or boot oil if the boots are stiff or rigid.
  • Wear them for short periods at first, then gradually increase wear time.
  • Move naturally in them during break-in to allow the boot to flex properly.

If pressure points persist, consider trying a different size or style.

In most cases, yes. VAT applies to safety boots unless specific exemption criteria are met.

These include:

  • They are provided free of charge to the employee.
  • The boots meet certain HMRC criteria for zero-rating.
  • The boots are supplied as part of an employee’s PPE under a contract of employment.

For more detailed information, check HMRC’s guidance or speak to your procurement team.

Yes! High leg work boots count as PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when worn to protect against workplace hazards - such as slips, crush injuries, or chemical spills.

To be classified as PPE, boots must meet EN ISO 20345:2022 and match the site-specific risks assessed.

All of our high leg boots are compliant and suitable for regulated work environments.

Take a look at our guide to safety boot standards for more information.

Under UK health and safety law:

It’s your responsibility as an employer to ensure workers are equipped with the right gear for the job.

Finding the right size in high leg boots is essential for comfort and safety.

We recommend:

  • Consider whether you’ll wear thicker socks in colder weather.
  • Trying the boots on at the end of the day, when feet are more swollen.
