FAQs

A spill kit is a set of equipment used to clean up hazardous spills.

Oil spill kits are most commonly required when oil drums leak or a vehicle has dripped engine fuel.

An oil spill kit must contain the following clean-up items:

  • Absorbent pads
  • Absorbent socks
  • Disposal bag and zip ties
  • Suitable waste bin for used items

You should also provide workers with suitable PPE for cleaning up oil spills.

Make sure this includes safety spectacles and hand protection such as chemical resistant gloves.

You can buy refills for an oil and fuel spill kit here at SMI!

We stock refill kits and bins in various sizes, as well as shoulder bag kits for use in vehicles.

Once the contents of an oil spill kit have been used, the items need to be bagged up and labelled.

Used oil spill kits should then be disposed of in a bin clearly marked as suitable for oil kit disposal.

If a substance has been spilled on a work site, employees will need to follow the spill control procedure. This procedure will depend on the type of spillage.

Use risk assessments to identify spillage risks in your workplace and to come up with adequate response measures.

The risk assessment should outline:

  • What PPE will be required
  • What spill control kit should be used
  • What personnel are trained to deal with a spillage
  • If the area needs to be cordoned off or evacuated
  • If emergency services should be called (i.e., in case of a fire)
