The 5 Ps of manual handling are a framework to help reduce the risk of injuries when lifting or moving loads.
They are:
- Plan – assess the load and plan what path to take with it
- Position – stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and bend at the knees and hips
- Pick – hold the load with a firm grip, with the heaviest side tucked closest to your waist
- Proceed – walk carefully while holding the load close to your torso, avoiding any twisting movements
- Place – bend your knees and keep your spine straight to lower the load, only letting go once it’s completely stable
